Ford Transit L3H2 van fit-out for Extreme Sound - cargo area and camper conversion

Insulation and interior finish

We started with full insulation of the walls, doors and ceiling. We used a rubber mat with an aluminium foil layer, which helps reduce heat loss and improves comfort when using the vehicle.

As part of the fit-out, we made:

  • a 12 mm anti-slip hexa plywood floor - waterproof, non-slip, strong and resistant to heavy use; finished with aluminium floor trim,

  • side panels made of 6.5 mm plywood laminated on both sides - durable, waterproof and easy to keep clean,

  • a ceiling made of plywood laminated on both sides, built in two sections joined by an aluminium strip; the cut-outs give it an interesting, modern look,

  • a bulkhead made of plywood laminated on both sides, with a recess left at the top that works as an extra shelf for small items,

  • the rear doors were fitted so that the plywood panels can be removed. Depending on needs, this uncovers the upholstered window recesses and gives the interior a more camper-style, cosy look.

  • areas not covered with plywood were finished in grey technical felt, keeping the interior consistent and neat.

Roof window with lighting

The next stage of the project was cutting an opening in the roof and installing a camper roof window. The black 700 × 500 mm window comes with built-in lighting, a black blind and an insect screen.

This solution not only improves the look of the fit-out, but above all provides extra light and ventilation inside, which matters when the van is used as a camper.

Airline load securing system

One of the key elements of the fit-out is the Airline rail system, which allows flexible and safe securing of transported equipment. We installed the rails on the side walls, the bulkhead and the ceiling. The ceiling rails also have built-in LED lighting. We completed the system with an auto-retracting strap with Airline fittings, as well as two tension bars with dedicated mounts.

From cargo area to a comfortable bed

The Airline system also allowed us to create a removable bed frame, which makes it easy to turn the Ford Transit into a camper.

The plywood panels rest on the installed tension beams. The frame fits perfectly into the prepared channels, so it does not shift during use.

Under the bed, up to the wheel arch covers, you can also fit a small bulkhead. It is fixed with wing screws for quick installation and removal. It works well both for business use and in the camper configuration.

The frame carries matching foam camper mattresses, which are additionally upholstered for proper comfort when resting.

Practical solutions for cargo transport

In the Ford Transit used as a cargo van, we added practical solutions that make it easier to transport heavy items. The right wheel arch cover has durable PE-HD (PE300) sliders to help move cargo. Next to the side door we installed a removable aluminium ramp, fixed with two wing screws, so the space can be quickly adapted to the user's needs.

Webasto Air Top 2000 STC heater

Thermal comfort is provided by the Webasto Air Top 2000 STC, which distributes heated air through both the cargo area and the passenger area.

It is an efficient, compact and reliable heater that works well when driving in cold conditions, as well as for overnight stays and rest in the camper configuration.

Complete electrical system

We also installed a full electrical system, with all devices housed in a suitably enlarged wheel arch cover. This keeps the installation tidy and protects the individual devices. The enclosed wheel arch cover also has vents that provide proper ventilation and protect the equipment from overheating.

The wheel arch cover houses, among others:

  • a 12 V LiFePO4 charger,

  • automotive electrical fuses,

  • a protection set with a 16 A circuit breaker in an IP65 enclosure,

  • a 6-circuit fuse box,

  • a Voltronic StandBy charger,

  • two batteries,

  • an inverter switch,

  • a master switch, i.e. the main battery power cut-off.

The system is also equipped with a 12 V car socket with USB and a cover, a 12 V cigarette lighter socket, a 230 V power socket and an external 230 V CEE socket.

Ford Transit ready for work and travel

This project shows that a van fit-out can combine the functionality of a work vehicle with the comfort of a camper. Day to day, the Ford Transit can be used to transport cargo and equipment, and thanks to the additional elements and the Airline system, it can be prepared for a trip and rest in a short time.
